WA Detention Centre Ablaze After Riot 9 News

Detainees at the Yongah Hill Immigration Detention Centre set fire to their units last night following a large riot.

The riot began not long after a detainee was found injured in their unit.

An Australian Border Force spokesperson confirmed to Perth Now that the detainee had been taken to hospital, however, it is unclear what caused their injuries and if his injuries sparked the riot.

The Department of Home Affairs said several accomodation buildings had been damaged and that detainees were moved to a different location whilst the damage was assessed.

The Australian Border Force has confirmed that no one was injured as a result of the fires and all staff and detainees have been accounted for.

“We are committed to ensuring the safety of those in immigration detention and will not tolerate violent and aggressive behaviour within IDCs,” an ABF spokesperson said.

“We will take all appropriate steps to stamp out such activity and if criminal offences have occurred, they will be referred to police.”
