A Star Is Born sent shivers down all of our spines, with Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga’s onscreen chemistry feeling so truly authentic that we forgot we were watching a movie.
Bradley not only starred in the film, but he also directed it!
And if that wasn’t hard enough, we’ve just found out that he stayed in character while directing some of the scenes, in particular the one where he stumbles drunk onto the stage as Ally accepts her Grammy for Best New Artist.
Bradley explained to Vanity Fair that he stayed ‘fake drunk’ and in character while directing those scenes.
“Thank God the actors were willing to allow me to direct them sort of in that state because it was easier to stay in that space.
“It just took me a little longer to communicate what I wanted.”
While he did this for scenes where he was in such a state, in others he would automatically switch into ‘director mode’ when the scene ended, such as in the one where he returns home with his onscreen brother Bobby (Sam Elliot) after he finished his time in rehab.
Sam revealed, “‘To see Bradley get out, perform that beat, shut the door’ – and then immediately shift into director mode – ‘and pick up a monitor, walk around to the front of the truck… I’m there like, ‘What the fuck, man? I’m still in the scene’… It was a really incredible moment for me to see Bradley-actor [switch into] Bradley-director. We did two takes of that.”
